PEER ATHLETIC LEADERS FOR 2008-2009
PEER ATHLETIC LEADER
Objectives:
To directly contribute to
prevention and education efforts of C.A.T.S. Life Skills and to expand the
support network for freshmen and other teammates in dealing with a variety of
issues. These objectives will be accomplished by providing support, information,
and referral services.
Purpose
- Leadership and guidance
for freshmen and teammates - Teammates turn to teammates first.
- To use your experience
to help others prevent and avoid problems.
- To obtain a better
understanding of C.A.T.S. services and campus network.
Responsibilities:
- RSVP for meetings

- Serve as a
mentor/advocate to teammates by providing information and direct referrals
to campus and community resources;
- Being as proactive as
possible – to help decrease self destructive behaviors and have those
affected get assistance/support.
- Listen, advise,
support, model. Help to identify possible solutions.
- Inform teammates/others
about your PAL role to be available for support. Check in with freshmen
teammates EARLY in the semester.
- Organize a social
activity to introduce them to other students.
- Trust, respect,
empathy, confidentiality
Skills Needed:
- Ability to work well
with others.
- Basic skills in
reflective listening.
- Basic communication
skills.
- Knowledge of community
and campus resources.
- Ability to be confident
and calm while answering questions about health related or life issues.
- Ability to remain
non-judgmental with others’ questions and concerns about behavioral or life
issues.
- Open to learning,
receptive to feedback, have empathy and be comfortable with responding to a
wide range of people experiencing significant difficulty in their lives.
- Professional
interaction with fellow team members.
- Ambition and motivation
to make a contribution.
- Commitment and
responsibility to fulfill required duties.
Training:
PAL meets once a month and
is designed to provide training, to enhance relationships between PALS and for
PALS to give one another feedback and support. Various campus areas will present
(CAPS, Career Services, Faculty Fellows, etc.) Additional special training
opportunities may also be available during the semester.
Commitment:
- To attend and
participate in meetings ~ once a month.
- To provide
updates/information and make relevant announcements at meetings.
- To make an active and
concerted effort to check in with freshmen teammates and to be available to
teammates that may have questions, concerns or problems.
Supervision:
Assistant Athletics Director
for C.A.T.S. Life Skills will conduct and organize PAL meetings and be available
to respond to any questions or concerns of the PALS.
