Kasser Medical Treatment Center
The mission of C.A.T.S. Medical Services is to provide excellent care to the student athletes at the University of Arizona. The certified athletic trainers and physicians work with coaches and the rest of the C.A.T.S. services as an integral part of an athlete's total success.
This mission has been enhanced in spring 2002 by the opening of The Kasser Medical Treatment Center . This center is located in McKale Center, room N108 as part of the new Eddie Lynch Pavilion. Housed in the Kasser Medical Treatment Center, is the Alex and Elisabeth Kasser Aqua Rehab Center which contains a 5,800 gallon underwater treadmill and swimming pool, along with two 480 gallon whirlpools and three extremity whirlpools.
The telephone number is (520) 621-4674. Treatment Center's regular hours are 7am-6pm during the school year. It is also open for practices and events. Check with your athletic trainer for specific times outside of regular hours. Please observe all posted rules for using the Athletic Treatment Center.
The athletic medicine staff is comprised of a team physician, and 12 certified athletic trainers. In addition, the entire staff works with a team of approximately 30 specialists in the community to provide comprehensive medical care for athletically related injuries and illnesses.
The team physician has an office located in the Kasser Medical Treatment Center and is available five days a week for athlete consultation. The UA also has three team orthopedic surgeons who visit the training room to examine student athletes three times per week. Doctors are also available for athletically related emergencies.
Injury Prevention
The athletic medicine staff is committed to working with strength
and conditioning coaches, team coaches and athletes in
implementing ways to prevent injuries. Although the
risk of injury cannot be completely eliminated, proper
strength and conditioning, adequate hydration, taping and
braces, and education are all methods employed by the staff to minimize the risk of injury or illness. Consult with your
team's athletic trainer if you have questions or concerns
about this topic.
Injury Evaluation and Treatment
In case of injury/illness you are required to follow the
procedure below:
1.
Report to Athletic Treatment Center for evaluation and
treatment. An Athletic Trainer will
direct you to appropriate physician as needed.
2.
If Athletic Treatment Center is closed call your Athletic
Trainer at home. If you cannot
reach them call another Athletic Trainer listed in the directory above.
3.
If you seek outside medical assistance without approval from
The Director of Medical Services the charges will be your responsibility.
*If you are injured or ill and missing practice you need to
receive treatment in the morning. This
allows your athletic trainer to contact your coach about your injury status.
Injury Rehabilitation
The athletic training staff and physical therapists are trained in
up-to-date methods of rehabilitating athletic injuries.
Rehabilitation entails returning an athlete to a level in
which he or she can return to his or her sport. The
staff utilizes equipment located in the rehabilitation area
of the training room such as Hydroworx Underwater Treadmill, balance boards, Swiss balls,
and other specialized equipment. Some stages of rehab may be conducted in the pool, while others done in the weight room or on the
field or court.
